Term 1 Flashcards
Define Matter
anything that takes up space and can be weighed
Name the three states of matter
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Simply explain why science looks like magic but isn’t
they both make us feel amazed and wonder about the world
What is an atom?
A thing that makes up objects.
Describe the structure of an atom (protons, neutrons, electrons)
The protons and neutrons make up the nucleus, while the electrons are on the outside on the nucleus.
Define what a subatomic particle is
A particle which is smaller than an atom in size.
Define an element.
A thing that has the same amount of atom particles and is on the periodic table.
How does technology increase our understanding of the atom.
Technology can increase our understanding because new technology can help people see atoms clearly.
What is the periodic table and why is it important?
It is important because it puts all the elements into a meaningful pattern.
How is the periodic table organised?
It is arranged in an order of increasing atomic mass.
Name and identify some elements in the periodic table
Gold, Iron, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Magnesium.
Identify properties of metals
Shiny, malleable, ductile and excellent conductors of electricity.
Identify properties of non metals
Less ductile, not good conductors of electricity, luster
Identify properties of semimetals
lower electrical and thermal conductivities, solids.
