Term 1 Flashcards
Define Matter
Matter can be defined as
anything that has mass and takes up space
It is a term to describe everything that makes up the “stuff” in the universe
Name the three states of matter
Solid, Liquid, Gas
Why does science look like magic but isnt
science is, based on reason and develops on the basis of observations and experiments while magic is born of tradition and is surrounded by mysticism.
What is an Atom
An atom is the smallest building block of matter. Everything around us is made of atoms.
what is the structure of an atom
Protons, positively charged particles
Neutrons, Neutral particles with no charge
Electrons, Negatively charged particles
What is a subatomic particle
A subatomic particle is a smaller particle which is smaller than an atom in size.
What is an element
A pure substance that only contains one type of atom.
Whats the periodic table and why is it important
The periodic table is a way of organising chemical elements
They ordered in increasing atomic number (number of protons)
How is the periodic table organised
Elements are organised in a table with rows and columns, with the atomic number increasing from left to right and top to bottom
What is K
Potassium
What is Na
Sodium
What is H
Hydrogen
What is Au
gold
what is O
Oxygen
What is N
Nitrogen
Identify properties of metals
Identify properties of non-metals
identify properties of semimetals
Identify key glossary words
