Term 1 Flashcards
what is great circle
is a circle formed by the intersection of the earths surface and imaginary plane that passes through the center
uses of great circle
navigators use great circles to find the shortest distance between any two points
used by meteorologists to determine climate and weather
Uses of latitudes
find location of a place and measure distance
Why are lines of longitude also called meridians of longitude ?
as it means noon the sun crosses the meridian at noon
The earth rotates from – and –
West to east
Effect of the inclined axis on the duration of Day and night
duration of day and night is not equal
if the axis was vertical instead of incline earth would not have same temperatures throughout the year
Why do we not feel the motion of the earth?
The force of gravity keeps everything attached to the earth and newtons first law
Characteristics of revolution
Well earth is closer to the sun the gravitational pull makes the earth move faster
earths axis is always inclined towards orbital plane an angle of 66 1/2°
Effects of revolution
seasonal change inclination of axis
perihelion
When the earth is closest to the sun
Aphelion
when the earth is farthest
State the dates of perihelion and aphelion
Perihelion third January aphelion 3 July
What is earths crust called?
Lithosphere
What is the composition of the earths crust?
It is divided into Sial & sima
it is the outer most thinnest layer
describe the mental state it’s two chief characteristics
it lies below the crust
divided into two parts upper mantle and lower mantle
lower mantle is hot and denser than the upper
