Term 1 Flashcards
Name 3 Properties of water
. Water is a polar molecule
. Water possesses the abilities of cohesion and adhesion
. Water has a high specific heat capacity

Name the 8 organelles involved in a prokaryotic cell
. Plasma membrane . Nucleoid region . Plasmid . Flagella . 70s ribosomes . Cell wall . Cytoplasm . Pili
What is evolution
The process of cumulative change in the heritable characteristics of a species or population overtime
What is a homologous structure
Physical features shared through evolutionary history with similar structures with different functions
What is an analogous structure
Structures with similar functions but I’m not from the same evolutionary origin
What is divergent evolution
The evolutionary pattern in which to species gradually become increasingly different from the common ancestral species occurs when closely related species diversify to new habitats.
What is convergent evolution
The opposite of diversion evolution organisms independently evolve similar traits as a result of having to adapt to similar environments or ecological niches
What is biogenesis
Biogenesis describes the principle that living things can only arise from other living things by reproduction not spontaneous generation
Define analogy
Similarities and structural function that does not indicate there is a recent common ancestor between two organisms
Explain nitrogen fixation
The conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into a form usable by plants and other organisms
Explain nitrogen assimilation
The process by which plants and animals intake NO3 + ammonia
Explain ammonification
The process in which organic nitrogen is decomposed and released as in organic nitrogen in the form of ammonia
Explain nitrification
The process by which ammonia is converted to nitrites and then nitrates
What factor may restrict the length of food chains
Energy loss between trophic levels
