Suffers now for the purpose of some anticipated gains. Being a hard worker, or a high achiever, is not synonymous with being a rat racer.

We learn to focus on the next goal rather than on our present experience and chase the ever-elusive future our entire lives.

A

Present benefit and future detriment.

A hedonist seeks pleasure and avoids pain. This person will do things that are potentially detrimental if they afford her immediate gratification.

Feels good in the moment, and give up on future happiness.

A

Future detriment and present detriment.

A nihilist person is a person who has given up on happiness, who has become redigned to the belief that life has no meaning.

Lost the lust for life.

  • Captures the state of being chained to the past. Such attachments to past failures has been described by Martin Seligman as “learn helplessness”
