Present Simple
A
- a habit or routine
- a general truth or fact
- introducing thoughts and statements
- a state verb in the present (see below)
- vivid storytelling
- a fixed timetable

Present Continuous
A
- an action happening now/at the moment
- an activity happening around the moment of speaking (these days)
- Frequent actions that are annoying, surprising, or strange / are a source of irritation
- a definite arrangement in the near future

Past Simple
A
- a past habit or routine
- fact about the past
- a completed past action

Past continuous
A
- an interrupted action in the past
- changing or developing situations in the past
- an ongoing activity at a certain time/period in the past
- Suggests that something irritating, or shocking, often happened in the past.

Present Perfect simple
A
- a recently completed action
- a past action with a relevant present result
- a life experience
- a state or action beginning in the past and continuing up to the present.

Present Perfect Continuous
A
- a recent activity with a visible result in the present. There is evidence that something has been going on.
- An ongoing action that started in the past and is still continuing now, emphasis on duration.

- an action that happened before another past action

- an ongoing action or situation that happened before another past action, emphasis on duration

A
- Pure& neutral future (also: promise)
- Spontaneous decision
- Hopes, beliefs, expectations, threats and predictions
- Official or polite form = shall

Future with “going to”
A
- a personal plan or intention for the future (not yet arranged)
- a prediction based on present evidence

A
- an action in progress at a specific time in the future
- A future action which may have a result
- A future action which may make another action possible/necessary
- Asking polite questions about personal plans and arrangements

Future Perfect Simple
A
- a predicted action which we expect to be completed by a particular time in the future.

A
- To show that an action/event will continue up until a particular event or time in the future. The event may then stop or continue.
