Simple Aspect
Describes facts
Present Simple
Tells about regular habits or truths (e.g. He walks to work)
Past Simple
Tells about completed past actions (e.g. They watched a movie)
Future Simple
Tells about future actions or decisions (e.g. I will call you)
Continuous Aspect
Describes actions in progress at a specific time (e.g. I am eating)
Present Continuous
Shows what is happening now (e.g. She is reading)
Past Continuous
Shows what was happening at a past time (e.g. He was cooking)
Future Continuous
Shows what will be happening at a future time (e.g. They will be driving)
Perfect Aspect
Describes completed actions with a connection to another time (e.g. I have finished)
Present Perfect
Describes past actions with present relevance (e.g. She has eaten)
Past Perfect
Describes an action completed before another past event (e.g. I had left)
Future Perfect
Describes an action that will be completed before a future time (e.g. We will have arrived)
Perfect Continuous Aspect
Describes the duration of an ongoing action up to a point (e.g. I have been working)
Present Perfect Continuous
Shows how long something has been happening (e.g. He has been studying)
Past Perfect Continuous
Shows how long something had been happening before another past event (e.g. They had been walking)
Future Perfect Continuous
Shows how long something will have been happening before a future time (e.g. She will have been waiting)
Simple Form
Base verb or past tense (e.g. eat / ate / will eat)
Continuous Form
Be + verb-ing (e.g. is eating / was walking / will be driving)
Perfect Form
Have/has/had + past participle (e.g. has gone / had seen / will have finished)
Perfect Continuous Form
