TENS, IFC, NMES, Traction Flashcards
What does TENS stand for?
Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation
What does TENS do?
- Produces muscle contractions
- Controls pain
- Promotes tissue healing
Contraindications for TENS
- Pacemaker
- DVT
- Pregnancy
- Open wounds
- Fractures
What does IVC stand for?
Interferrental Current
3 Types of Current/Waveform
- Direct current: continuous stream flow in one direction
- Alternating current: for pain control and muscle stim
- Pulsed current: Interrupted flow, pain control and tissue healing
What does NMES stand for?
Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation
What does NMES do?
Produces muscle contractions in innervated muscles
What is the term for using 2 electrodes?
Premodulated
What does traction do?
- Distract joint surfaces
- Stretch soft tissue
- Reduce protrusion of discal material
- Relax muscles
- Mobilize joints
Indications for traction
- Disc bulge/herniation
- Spinal nerve root impingement
- Joint hypermobility
- Subacute joint inflammation
- Muscle spasm
Contraindications for traction
- Acute injury
- Inflammation
- Joint instability
- Uncontrolled hypertension
What are the precautions for using TENS?
1.Skin Sensitivity
2. Oils, skin lotion
3. Hypersensitivity
What effect does TENS have on circulation?
Improves circulation
What effect does TENS have on the nervous system?
Increase nerve conduction
What is 80-150 TENS?
High rate, recommended for sensation, NOT for muscle contraction
