Tendinopathy Flashcards
What is it
Disorder of the tendons, often involving degeneration. It includes tendinitis (inflammation) and tendinosis (dengeneration without inflammation)
Features
Pain - worsens with activity
Swelling
Tenderness
Reduced ROM
Weakness
Epidemiology
Common MSK issue - active individuals
Affecting 30%- 50% athletes
5 - 10% of general population
High incidences in athletes - repetitive stress
Age
30 - 60
Rare in younger unless involved in high impact sports
Older - general degenerative changes
Risk/ causes
Age
Overuse/ repetitive movements
Previous tendon injuries
Poor biomechanics - imbalances
Genetic factors
Medical conditions - diabetes, obesity, autoimmune
Presentation
Gradually onset of pain
Pain worsens with activity
Morning stiffness
Localised tenderness and swelling
Crepitus
Prognosis
Mild cases - may resolve within weeks with rest
Chronic cases - possibly permanent damage
Physical therapy
High risk of recurrence
