First Commandment

What is the difference between a vow and an oath?
Vow: invoking God’s name in a promise
Oath: invoking God’s name in telling the truth
Blasphemy
words used against God in an angry or scornful manner - “I hate God.” or saying you are godlike (Jesus’ trial was for blasphemy)
Third Commandment
Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy
Why is Sunday the Sabbath?
God created light, Pentecost, and Easter - all on Sundays
Honor your father and mother (so that you may live long)
Fourth commandment
What should we do to respect our parents, church officials, and civil servants?
love, obey, respect, and care for them
They should do the same but also educate us on our faith. (“Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s and render unto God what is God’s”)
Fifth Commandment
Thou shall not murder - life begins at moment of conception and should only be taken by God in a natural manner
Murder
the intentional unjustified taking of another person’s life (does not count animals and bugs)

When does life begin?
At the moment of conception
Life ends with
natural death taken by God
Four Conditions of a just war
- Government Sanction
- Negotiation failure
- Just cause
- Waged by proper means
What is euthanasia/mercy killing?
the intentional act of taking someone’s life due to an incurable or painful disease
Why is the Church against mercy killing?
- Suffering bond us with Jesus and others

the intentional act between to people that breaks their wedding vow (objectification and envy play a part)
emotional affair
imagining committing adultery and showing negativity towards your relationship with your spouse (consumed with envy and negative thoughts, wearing out your partner and yourself)
steal
intentionally taking something that does not belong to you
burglary
breaking and entering someplace to steal something
robbery
using force or threat of force to steal something
embezzlement
taking from the organization you work for
larceny
using deception or lying to steal
Higher the cost of an item =
higher the punishment
lie
disconnect between what we think in our heads and what comes out of our mouth

lying under oath (usually in court)
defamation of character
doing something to damage someone’s reputation; includes gossip
detraction
telling the truth to damage someone’s reputation

telling a lie to hurt or harm another person

Commission lies/omission lies
Commission - action of actually lying
Omission - failing to tell the truth
What happens when we lie?
integrity and credibility are compromised
Why can’t a lie be justified?
- We assume people are telling the truth
- Society is built on honesty/ telling the truth
- It is a sin of injustice to lie (violation to others)
New Covenant
JESUS! :) - “Do not judge and you will not be judged, do not condemn and you will not be condemned, and forgive and you will be forgiven.”
Greatest commandment
- Love God above all things

What did Jesus change about the commandments?
He turned “thou shall nots” into “thou shall love”
