Temporary Logistics Flashcards
Temp Logistics
Logistics network operate within supply networks
They are responsible for the “planning, implementing and controlling the flow and storage of goods at materials” (CSCMP, 2013)
Temporary Logistics Networks also do this, but in response to a temporary task that required to be carried out
The temporary task is generally carried out for a limited time period or until an event indicates an end
Difference
Focus on the short term: Capital expenditure is limited because can’t be discounted over future returns
New relationships: Including between organisations and employees
Interface with permanent systems: Determines the size and capacity of the temporary logistics operations
Task
Temporary logistics networks are frequently defined by their initial specified task which helps to identify important dimensions for managers to consider:
Level of control over the operating situation
Amount of preparation time available
The likelihood the task will change during start-up of operations
Probability of occurrence / recurrence of the task
These dimensions help to define the structure and behaviour of the proposed logistics network.
Approach
Identify shortcuts for purchasing, recruiting, delivery
Use available (latent) facilities where possible
Recruit highly flexible people (ex METs)
happy to be “dropped into it”
Track record of solving problems in short, finite time with limited specs and facilities
Develop facilities capable of being reconfigured rapidly
Develop facilities rapidly!
Assume the end problem won’t be the start problem
Learning
Hard
Use existing facilities where possible
Rapidly changing specs
Assume things will go wrong
Simplify the part of the chain that will be out of your control
Soft
Clinical vs non-clinical view of risky activities
Inventiveness of students
Stress associated with covid-19
Closed loop supply chain- with people in the middle
People assume logistics just happens
