Temporary dressings and cementing materials Flashcards
What are the temporary dressing materials?
List chemical then the brand
- calcium hydroxide (Dycal or Life)
- zinc oxide and eugenol (ZOE) (Kalzinol)
- zinc polycarboxylate (Poly F)
- glass ionomer
What are the temporary cementing materials?
Temp Bond
What brand of calcium hydroxide is used?
Dycal or Life
What brand of zinc oxide eugenol is used?
Kalzinol
What brand of zinc polycarboxylate is used?
Poly F
What brands of GIC are used?
- Fuji II and Fuji IX
- Chemfil
- AquaCem
What type of material is Temp Bond?
It is a zinc oxide eugenol based cement
What are the properties of calcium hydroxide?
- bactericidal
- stimulates production of secondary dentine
- promotes remineralisation
- hard setting
- radio opaque
- non adhesive
What is calcium hydroxide used for?
acts as a dental liner. It is used for:
- direct/indirect pulp capping
- protective liner under varnishes, filling materials, cement
What are the properties of zinc oxide eugenol?
- bactericidal
- non-adhesive
- sedative
- eugenol can affect polymerisation of composites: don’t use in composite restorations!
What is zinc oxide eugenol used for?
- acts as a dental liner.
- 1st choice for dressing a retentive cavity
- also acts as a dental cement
what are the properties of zinc polycarboxylate?
- bonds to dentine
- acidic: don’t put near the pulp
- very white: not good aestehtically
What is zinc polycarboxylate used for?
- used to permanently cement crowns/bridges
- can be used in non-retentive cavities
- can be used to increase strength
What are the properties of GIC?
- bonds to enamel and dentine
- good aesthetics
- strong material
- releases Fluoride
What is the difference between Fuji II and Fuji IX?
Fuji II: light cured, so is stronger
Fuji IX: self-cured, so is weaker
