When is ESW introduced?
In short notice on TCB areas on multi track lines when several signals have failed.
Persons and authorities involved in ESW
Driver, Signaller, Guard, NR3190
Actions at start of ESW
Signal at danger
Stop, DRA, Contact signaller
Fill out NR3190 ESW ticket
Isolate TPWS using TEMPORARY isolation switch (may have to break seal) & check temporary isolation light is illuminated.
Isolate ATP (in N press ON for 10s. Display will show ISO)
Inform guard.
Pass signal when authorised by signaller
Actions During ESW
Follow instructions on NR3190
IF FIRST TRAIN:
Approach points, switch diamonds, swing nose crossings at caution & check they’re in correct position. (if they aren’t stop and contact signaller).
Are level crossings controlled by handsignallers? Check NR3190
Actions at end of ESW
Stop and set DRA
Reinstate TPWS (turn TEMPORARY isolation switch) and ATP (press ON button).
Contact signaller, write CANCELLED across NR3190 ticket
Follow signaller’s instructions (may have to pass at danger under signaller’s authority [TPWS train stop override button & ATP pass stop signal button], proceed at caution)
Hand NR3190 to DSM
Speeds during ESW
Max 50mph
(unless otherwise instructed by signaller)
Max 15mph over points/crossings if first train
Max caution if examining line / FADE
Exceptions to ENTER ESW without the working ticket
Not the driver of lead locomotive, or:
FADE
Assisting a Failed train.
Removing train that passed without Authority.
Remove a portion of a Divided train.
Evacuate pax from failed train
Modified protection in ESW
If train has failed AND can’t contact signaller:
Emergency protection on your line
If train accident AND can’t contact signaller OR signaller requests it as he can’t provide protection from signals:
Place emergency protection on your line in addition to any other line that needs it
3 major risks in ESW
1 No signal protection
2 Safety systems isolated (TPWS + ATP)
3 Authority given verbally, therefore prone to error
When is TBW introduced?
TCB areas on multi track lines when several signals have failed. Ideally advised in WON, but can be short notice
Persons and authorities involved in TBW
Driver, Signaller, Handsignallers, Guard, RT3184 (TBW ticket)
Actions at start of TBW
Signal at danger, protected by Handsignaller & detonator
Stop, DRA, Contact handsignaller
Read RT3184 TBW ticket given by handsignaller, achieve clear understanding.
Isolate TPWS using TEMPORARY isolation switch (may have to break seal) & check temporary isolation light is illuminated.
Isolate ATP (in N press ON for 10s. Display will show ISO)
Inform guard.
Pass signal when authorised by Handsignaller with yellow handsignal.
Actions During TBW
Follow instructions on RT3184
IF FIRST TRAIN:
Approach points, switch diamonds, swing nose crossings at caution & check they’re in correct position. (if they aren’t stop and contact signaller).

Actions at end of TBW
Stop and set DRA

Contact handsignaller, hand over RT3184 ticket
Handsignaller will remove detonator and contact signaller to have signal set to green if possible.
Follow handsignaller’s instructions (may have to pass at danger under handsignaller’s authority [TPWS train stop override button & ATP pass stop signal button], proceed at caution). DO NOT PROCEED WITHOUT HANDSIGNALLER’S AUTHORITY REGARDLESS OF SIGNAL ASPECT.

Max 50mph
