Temporal Processing Flashcards
What is temporal processing?
the auditory systems ability to detect small rapid changes in stimulus or the ordering
What two methods have been employed to measure temporal resolution?
temporal discrimination, TMTF (Temporal modulation transfer function)
Why is temporal ordering important for speech perception? How is it measured?
important because you need to be able to process speech in order of how it was presented
otherwise you do not understand the conversation
Describe and illustrate with a sketch how a
gap detection experiment or test would be
administered.
noises are presented with gaps of silence between them and we are testing for the smallest detectable gap
noise _____________ noise
noise __________ noise
noise ____ noise (over time)
What is TMTF
detecting amplitude modulated signals (lower rates = easy detection fast rates = no detection)
Auditory system is good at detecting amplitude changes at _______
Low modulation frequencies
fast frequency rate we need a ______ modulation depth (amplitude)
deep
slow frequency rate we need a _____ modulation depth (amplitude)
shallow
Process auditory info in way in which it is received
temporal ordering
describe the effects of duration on tonality
Extremely brief sounds will be perceived as a click
describe the effects of duration on absolute threshold
Absolute threshold decreases with presentation
during up to 200-300 msec
describe the effects of duration on loudness perception
Loudness perception diminishes over sustained
presentation, this is called loudness adaptation,
greater closer to threshold
What is temporal integration and how is it relevant for absolute threshold?
ability of the auditory system to integrates and adds info coming in over a short time window
What is the minimum presentation length of a pure tone to ensure valid testing?
200 msec
modulation depth
amplitude
