Temporal/Infratemporal Fossa Flashcards
Floor of temporal fossa
-frontal, parietal, temporal & greater wing of sphenoid
1st part of maxillary artery
-deep auricular, anterior tympanic, middle meningeal, accessory meningeal, inferior alveolar
Deep auricular
-to external acoustic meatus
Anterior tympanic
-to tympanic membrane
Middle meningeal
-to the cranial meninges through foramen spinosum
Accessory meningeal
-to the cranial meninges through the foramen ovale
Inferior alveolar
-to the mandibular teeth through mandibular foramen
2nd part of maxillary artery
- lies over the lateral pterygoid muscle.
- -masseteric branches, deep temporal branches, pterygoid branches, buccal branches
Masseteric branches
-supply the masseter
Deep temporal branches
-supply the temporalis
Pterygoid branches
-supply the medical and lateral pterygoid
Buccal branches
-supply the muscles of the cheek
3rd part of maxillary artery
- extends from the medial edge of lateral pterygoid muscle to its termination in the pterygopalatine fossa & provides this branches—>
- —posterior superior alveolar, infraorbital, descending palatine, sphenopalatine
3 ligaments of TMJ
-stylomandibular, sphenomandibular, lateral ligament
Stylomandibular
-a band of deep cervical fascia from styloid process to angle of mandible
Sphenomandibular
-membranous band from spine of sphenoid to lingula of mandible
Lateral ligament
-temporomandibular ligament–>attached to the capsule and to the articular disc—>checks mediolateral movement of TMJ
Sensory branches of mandibular nerve
-auriculotemporal nerve, buccal nerve, inferior alveolar nerve, lingual nerve
Auriculotemporal nerve
- encircles middle meningeal artery and supplies——–>auricle, skin over the temporal region, TMJ, secretory para fibers to the parotid. This fibers belong to CN IX but travel with auriculotemporal nerve.
- -external auditory meatus and tympanic membrane
Buccal nerve
-long buccal–>supplies skin and mucous membranes of cheek and lateral surface of oral gingiva
Inferior alveolar nerve
- supplies all teeth on its side of mandible, passes through the mandibular foramen to enter the mandible
- -has 3 branches–>mylohyoid nerve, mental nerve, incisive nerve
Lingual nerve
-sensory to the tongue, floor of the mouth and gingiva
Mylohyoid nerve
- supplies the anterior belly of digastric and mylohyoid muscles.
- this branch is given off before the nerve enters the mandible
Mental nerve
-supplies the skin of the chin. Exits the inferior alveolar canal through the mental foramen
