Temporal bones Flashcards
What are the three parts of the temoral bone
Squamous, tympanic ,and mastoid
where is the zygomatic process
lower on the squamous part of the temporal bone
what is the zygomatic process
A bar-like projection on the squamous part of the temporal bone
What does the zygomatic process do
forms the zygomatic arch (cheekbone) by interfacing with the zygomatic bone of the face
Where is the mandibular fossa
to the left of the zygomatic process on the squamous part of the temporal bone (posterior due to looking from the side)
what is the mandibular fossa
an indention on the squamous part of the temporal bone
what does the mandibular fossa do
Receives the condylar process of the mandible to form the temporomandibular joint
Where is the squamous part of the temporal bone
The anterior part of the bone
Where is the tympanic part of the temporal bone
The lower part of the bone.
Where is the External auditory meatus
The lower middle of the temporal bone
what is the external auditory meatus
The ear canal
What does the external auditory meatus do
forms part of the extenal ear
Where is the mastoid part of the temporal bone
lower postiror part of the temporal bone
Where is the jugular foramen
The mastoid part of the temporal bone
what does the jugular foramen do
allows the internal jugular vein and three nerves to pass through it (IX, X, XI)
Where is the carotid canal
anterior to the jugular foramen
What does the carotid canal do
transmits the carotid artery to the cranial cavity
Where is the internal acoustic meatus
suprolateral to the jugular foramen
what does the intenal acoustic meatus do
transmits cranial nerves (VII and VIII)
where is the mastoid process
lowest part on the mastiod section
what does the mastoid process do
ancors some mussles
where is the styloid process
the lowest part of the tympanic region part of the temporal bone
what does the styloid process do
attachment point for some tong and neck mussels and a ligament that secures the hyoid bone to the scull
where is the stylomastiod foramen
between the styloid process and the mastoid process
what does the stylomastiod foramen do
allows the cranial nerve (VII facial nerve) to leave the skull
What is in the mastoid region of the temporal bone
Middle and internal ear cavity, Jugular foramen, Carotid canal, Internal acoustic meatus, mastoid process , stylomastoid foramen
What is in the tympanic region
external acoustic meatus and styloid process
what is in the squamous region
Zygomatic process and mandibular fossa
