Temperature Tolerance Lab Flashcards
Abiotic Factors
Nonliving or physical components of an environment
Biotic Factors
Living components of an environment
Range of Tolerance
The environmental conditions that a species can tolerate
Scientific Method
A disciplined way of asking questions; self-correcting process of scientific information
Steps of Scientific Method
1) Identify question
2) Form testable hypothesis
3) Develop a test of the hypothesis
4) Collect data
5) Interpret results (refine and revise original hypothesis)
6) Report for peer review
Biology of Bakers Yeast
Eukaryotic organism that has a nucleus, mitochondria, and other internal structures not found in bacteria; small size, short generation time, and common availability
Easily cultured, under favorable conditions the population size can double every two hours or so.
Requires a lot of cellular respiration
How Does a Respirometer Work?
Measures cellular respiration
Fill one tube with bakers yeast and glucose solution and invert it with a larger tube, measure cellular respiration by the size of the bubble
What is cellular respiration? What are the waste products?
Cellular metabolic process by which cells synthesize ATP (energy molecules).
Waste products are CO2 and water
What do we use bakers yeast in?
Baked goods and beer
