Temperature-Sensing and Control Devices Flashcards
What are the three basic bi-metal type temperature sensing devices?
Strip.
Spiral.
Disc.
Why are disc type bi-metal elements more suitable for high current loads?
The snap action of their contacts.
Which type of bi-metal element has the highest level of sensitivity?
Spiral type.
What kind of fluid is often inside bellows type temperature sensing devices?
Ether.
When heated it vaporizes to expand the bellows greatly.
What is the most suitable application of liquid bulb temperature sensors?
To measure the temperature of fluids in a sealed tank or pipe.
How is a thermopile constructed?
Many thermocouples connected in series.
What is a thermistor made of?
Semiconductive material, with a negative temperature coefficient.
What material is commonly used in RTDs?
Platinum.
It is chemically stable and has a high melting point.
What would be used to measure the temperature of a blast furnace safely?
A pyrometer.
It can measure up to 4000 degrees, they measure at a distance.
What kind of furnace always has more than one high limit control?
Counter flow furnaces.
What is a typical high limit set point?
80-120 degrees C, 121 being the maximum allowable for forced air furnaces. This is increased to 149 degrees C for gravity furnaces.
What does DIP mean?
Dual Inline Package.
What are the three primary considerations when setting a fan control?
Comfort,
Proper cycling,
Economy.
What will happen if Fan -on is set too high?
The registers will blow air that is too hot.
What will happen if fan -off is set too high?
The inrush of cool air when the fan starts may trigger the fan to cycle instantly.
It may also simply reduce efficiency as residual heat is wasted to the flue.
