Temperature and heat transfer Flashcards
What is the difference between heat and temperature?
Heat is when you take all of the thermal energy in an object and find the sum (add it up) and temperature is the average of all of the energy (mean)
What is Radiation?
Radiation is energy that is transferred by electromagnetic waves. Matter is not needed for this process
What is conduction
Conduction is the transfer of energy through matter from particle to particle.
What is convection
Convection is the transfer of heat energy by the movement of matter in currents
{Fluids (Liquid or Gas) transfer heat energy in this way.}
Explain how an alcohol thermometer works.
It works because of the fact that liquids expand more than solids as their temperature increases. If both liquid and glass expanded equally, the entire thing will grow.
______________ does not need particles to transfer heat.
Radiation
______________ is the transfer of heat in solids.
Conduction
______________ is the transfer of heat as particles rise and collide.
Convection
