Temperature And Heat Flashcards
Temperature
Measure of kinetic energy per molecule (jiggling)
What is temperature a measurement of
The random kinetic energy of particles in a substance
What are the temperature scales
Fahrenheit and Celsius
How does a thermometer work
As temperature increases the liquid molecules move faster and bounce off each other, causing the liquid to expand and take up more space in the thermometer
Thermal energy
Energy due to temperature
Heat
Thermal energy that is moving
How does heat flow
Any time there is a difference in temperature heat flows from warmer to colder
Specific heat
A property of a substance that tells us how much heat is needed to raise the temperature of one gram of material by one degree Celsius
How does specific heat affect the change in temperature
Knowing the specific heat of a material tells you how quickly the temperature will change as it gains or loses energy
Why some substances have a greater or smaller specific heat
When energy is divided between fewer particles then there’s more energy per particle and more temperature change (lower specific heat)
What does a low specific heat mean
Less energy is needed to change the temp so it changes quickly
What does a high specific heat mean
More energy is needed to change the temperature so it changes more slowly
heat equation
E=mC(T2-T1)
Heat energy=massspecific heatchange in temperature
Heat transfer
Process where thermal energy flows from a higher temperature to a lower temperature
Conduction
The transfer of heat by the direct contact or particles of matter
