TEMPERATURE AND HEAT Flashcards
one of the key branches of science and
engineering
Thermodynamics
It deals with the systematic study of a system’s
thermal or internal energy
refers to the energy that is transferred spontaneously from a system to its environment through a process other than through the transfer of matter or through work.
Heat
the fluid at the bottom of the kettle is subjected
to an increase in temperature and becomes less dense, while the colder denser fluid on top sinks.
Boiling water
heat transfers from the coffee to the
air above it, the hotter less dense air rises and is seen as steam.
Hot coffee with steam
cooler air is drawn at the bottom of a room, while the warmer air is released at the top.
Radiator
it is thought to be one of the driving
mechanisms of plate motion. Hot materials from the earth’s interior rises to the earth’s surface. This eventually cools down and sinks back to the earth’s mantle.
Mantle convection
a process affected by both temperature and salinity in the different parts of the ocean. The water at the surface in the polar regions becomes very cold and forms ice
Thermohaline circulation
heat occurs due to the collisions of the
particles in objects placed near a heat source.
Conduction
the mechanism of heat transfer that occurs by
mass movement of the molecules from one place to another.
Convection
a heat transfer mechanism that could transfer
the heat even without the presence of matter.
Radiation
Fluids are not considered as good conductors of heat, but they can still transfer heat through convection. Convection could either be classified as
forced or free/natural.
