Tell me Questions Flashcards
Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
You would check the oil by removing the dipstick, wiping it, then dip it back in, removing it again and the oil should leave an oily mark between the max and minimum marker.
Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient engine coolant.
The coolant can be checked by looking at the maximum and minimum levels found on the side of the expansion tank. (never open coolant if it is hot)
Open the bonnet and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic break fluid.
It can be checked by looking at the maximum and minimum levels found on the side of the brake fluid reservoir.
Tell me how you would test the breaks are working before a journey.
I would drive forward slowly, press the break and it shouldn’t feel spongey or slack and the car should not pull to one side.
Tell me where you would find information on the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how the tyre pressure should be checked.
I would find tyre pressure information in the car’s manual and I would check and adjust all the tyres, including any spares, when they are cold using a reliable air pressure gauge. Afterwards I would refit the valve caps.
Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
I would adjust head restraint so the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as my eyes or the top of my ears and as close to my head as comfortable.
Tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
I would check all tyres with a tread depth gauge. The tread depth should be no less than 1.6mm across the central 3/4 breadth of the tyre and I would check this all the way round the tire. They are generally safe if they do not have any cuts or bulges.
Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
I would turn the ignition on, turn the dipped headlights on and then walk around the car to check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system (ABS).
The ABS warning light should turn on if there is a problem.
Tell me how you would check the direction indicators are working.
I would press the hazard warning lights button (the red triangle). Then I would walk around the car to make sure all six indicators are working.
Tell me how you would check the break lights are working in this car.
I would turn on the ignition, press the foot break and either see reflections in the window or garage door or ask someone for help to check if they are working.
Tell me how you would check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
I would give the steering a little pressure as I start the engine, which should result in a slight movement as the system begins to operate. OR turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning (light to turn and not heavy).
Tell me how you would switch on the rear fog light(s) and explain when you would use it/them.
Firstly I would turn on the dipped headlights by twisting the left stalk behind the steering wheel up twice. Then to switch on the rear fog light, I would twist the middle of the stalk up once. You will know when it is on, as you will see a warning light in the dashboard. You would use this when you cannot see further than 100 metres due to fog.
Tell me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on.
I would turn on the dipped headlights (twist the left stalk behind the steering wheel up twice). Then push whole stalk forward for the main beam. A blue indicator light on the dashboard shows that the main beam is on.
