TELL ME DRIVING TEST Flashcards
Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey
brake should not feel spongey or slack and tested as you pull off, the car should not pull to the side
tell me where you’d find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how the tyre pressures should be checked?
tyre pressures are in the manufacturers guidebook that comes with the car, use a reliable pressure gauge, test the tyres when they are cold (not after a long journey), remember to fit the valve caps and check spare tyre if have one
Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash?
rigid/central part should be level with eyes and ears and as close to head
tell me how you’d check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road?
get a coin and push in tread - need more than 1.6mm over middle 3/4 of the tyre and entire outer circumference, check for bumps, scrape and bubbles on wall of tyre
tell me how you’d check the headlights and tail lights are working. you don’t need to exit the vehicle
explain that you would operate the switch and then walk around the vehicle and check the lights - if check on dash, green lights come on that tell you side lights and dipped headlights are on
tell me how you’d know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system?
when turn on ignition, check the ABS light coming on on the dash board - if that light appears and then turns off the anti lock braking system is working stays it isn’t working
Tell me how you’d check the direction indicators are working. you don’t need to exit the vehicle
press the hazard warning light (triangle) - would have all the indicators going - explain that you would then go out of the car to check they are all working
tell me how you’d check the brake lights are working
explain operate the brake pedal (press down) then look in reflections in cars/windows or get someone to help you
tell me how you’d check the power-assisted steering is working before starting a journey
when the engine is off the steering wheel should feel heavy and not be able to move much. when the engine is switched on it becomes much lighter
tell me how you’d switch on the rear fog lights and how you’d use them. dont exist vehicle
(left knob) first turn headlights on (bottom symbol) on bottom wheel to dipped headlights. then on inside wheel then turn that up and down, should have 4 lights on on the dashboard (orange light says rear fog light is working). would use these when your vision is restricted to less than 100m
tell me how you’d switch the headlights from dipped to main beam and how you’d know main beam was on
turn on car, turned on dipped then pull whole arm towards you, check light is on on the dashboard
open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check the engine has sufficient oil
dip stick in bonnet (stick with ring at the end). pull it out, wipe it, put it back it, pull it back out again and if the oil is between the two marks then know have enough oil
open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check the engine has sufficient engine coolant
look for triangle symbol w water marks and thermometer - look at the level is between the max and min
open the bonnet and tell me how you’d check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid
look for yellow octogon symbol (with circle and two lines either side) and look at clear tank - check level of fluid is between max and min
