Tell Me Flashcards
Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
The brakes should not feel slack or spongy. Brakes should be tested as soon as you set off and the vehicle should not pull to one side.
Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how tyre pressures should be checked.
There is a plate inside the driver door with the recommended tyre pressures on. Use a reliable pressure gauge to check and adjust the tyre pressures when the tyres are cold and don’t forget to check the spare tyre, remember to refit the valve caps.
Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
The head restraint should be adjusted so that the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or the top of the ears and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable. Some head restraints might not be adjustable.
Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
The tyres should have no cuts or bulges. There should be a minimum 1.6mm of tread depth across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire circumference.
Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working (no need to exit the vehicle).
Turn the ignition on and switch the dial all the way to the right, green light on the dashboard. Then I would get out of the vehicle and walk round checking for 2 lights at the front (headlights and side lights) and 2 lights at the back (taillights and rear number plate light). As this is a tell me question there is no need to physically check the lights.
Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system.
A warning light should illuminate on the dash if there is a fault with the anti-lock braking system.
Tell me how you would check that the direction indicators are working.
Put the hazard warning lights on and then walk around the vehicle checking for 2 at the front, 2 at the back and 2 on the door mirrors. Switch off hazard warning lights.
Tell me how you would check that the brake lights are working on this car. (I can assist you, if you need to switch the ignition on but please don’t start the engine).
Switch the ignition on. Ask examiner to walk to back of vehicle. Apply brake pedal 3 times. If you are on your own you would use reflective surfaces like shop windows, garage doors. Switch ignition off.
Tell me and explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
Before starting a journey 2 simple checks can be made. Apply gentle pressure on the steering wheel and start the engine. This should result in a slight and noticeable movement as the system begins to operate. Alternatively turning the steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance is functioning.
Tell me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them.
Turn on the ignition and switch on the headlights, then push the second button on your right and explain that you would use them when visible is seriously reduced to 100 metres or less. Check the orange light is on dash display.
Tell me how you would switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on whilst in the car.
Turn ignition on. Turn on headlights. Push indicator stalk away from you and explain that the blue light in the centre of the dash shows the main beam is on.
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
Identify dipstick/oil level indicator. Explain that when the car is on a level surface and the engine is cold you would remove the dipstick, wipe it clean with a cloth then replace it fully. You would then remove it and check the oil level against the minimum and maximum level.
(DONT HAVE IT SO EXPLAIN)
Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
Identify coolant tank and maximum and minimum numbers on the side and how to top up to the correct level. (YELLOW STICK CAP)
Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid resevoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic fluid.
Identify brake fluid resevoir and check level against high/low markings on side. (CAN’T SEE)
Windscreen reservoir?
Identify blue cap. Min/Max levels.
