How to check brakes are working before starting a journey
Brakes should not feel spongy or slack, should be tested as you set off, vehicle should not pull to one side

Use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when cold, don’t forget spare tyre, remember to refit valve caps
How to make sure head restraint is correctly adjusted for protection in a crash
Rigid part of restraint is at least as high as eyes or top of ears, and as close to back of head as comfortable
Check tyres have enough tread depth and safe condition
No cuts or bulges. 1.6mm tread depth across central 3/4 of breadth of tyre, and around entire outer circumference
Check headlights and tail lights are working
Flip switch, show how. Walk around vehicle and check them.
How to know if there’s a problem with the anti-lock braking system
Start engine light, if warning stays on it is a problem (abs)
Check direction indicators are working
Flick switch, walk around and check them
Check brake lights are working
Operate brake pedal, use a mirror or reflection or a friend
Check power-assisted steering is working
If steering is heavy system may not be working correctly. Before starting can do checks:
1. Gentle pressure on steering wheel, maintained while engine is started, should result in slight but noticeable movement
2. Turn steering wheel just after moving off to give immediate indication that power assisting is functioning
Switch on rear fog lights and when to use it them
Operate switch and check light is on. Used when there’s fog so cars can see you easily
How to switch headlights from dipped to main beam
Operate switch and check main beam warning light is on
Open bonnet and check engine had enough oil
Identify dipstick/oil level marker, check of oil level against min/max markers
Open the bonnet and say how to check engine has sufficient engine coolant
Identify high/low level markings on a header tank where fitted or radiator filler cap, describe how to top up to correct level
Open bonnet and how to check safe level of of hydraulic brake fluid
Identify reservoir, check level against high and low markings

- Change wheel again when 13.30 degrees, go straight
- When doorhandle is on the curb one right loop
- Straighten when in correct place
- If far from curb half steer left, bring it close, half right
