How do you check brakes are working before staring journey.
Brakes should’t feel spongey or slack.
Test them as you set off.
Car shouldn’t pull to one side.
Where would you find recommended tire pressures for car and how should you check?
Manufacturer’s guide.
Use reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust pressures when tyres are cold. Remember to refit valve caps. Don’t forget spare tyre.
How do you make sure head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides best protection in crash?
Adjust it so the rigid part is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.
Some restraints might not be adjustable.
How do you check tyre tread depth and general condition?
No cuts or bulges.
1.6mm tread depth across the central 3/4 of the tyre and around the entire circumference.
How do you check that headlights and tail lights are working?
Turn on the switch (turn on car if needed) then work round the car to check them all.
How would you know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system?
ABS warning sign would be illuminated if there is a fault.
How would you check the direction indicators are working?
Turn on the hazards switch (with car turned on) then walk around the car.
How would you check the brake lights are working?
Push the break pedal, use reflections or ask someone to check for you.
Tell me how you would check the power-assisted steering is working before starting journey?
Turn ignition on and turn wheel, should not be heavy.
Test by:
1) Turn wheel sightly then and start engine, should notice slight movement as it kicks in.
2) Turn the wheel just after moving off to check it.
How do you switch on rear fog lights and when would you use them?
Turn the switch on (engine and dipped headlights on), check warning light is on.
Use when visibility is seriously reduced, < 100m.
How do you switch headlight from dipped to main beam, and how do you know it’s on?
Operate switch (with ignition on), turn from dipped to main beam, check with main beam warning light on dash.
Open bonnet and tell me how you would check that engine has sufficient oil.
Find dipstick, wipe it off, dip it, should be within min and max. If it’s low, fill it up, but over max can damage engine.
Open bonnet and tell me how you would check that engine has sufficient coolant?
Find high and low level markings on header tank near radiator filler cap, top up to at or below maximum. Only do when engine is cold otherwise you could get injured.
Open bonnet and tell me how you would check that engine has safe level of hydraulic brake fluid?
Find reservoir, check level against the high and low markings. If you need to fill up, get manual and find right type to use.
