Tell me how you’d check that the brakes are working before starting a journey
Brakes shouldn’t feel spongy or slack, when you brake vehicle shouldn’t pull to one side
Tell me where you’d find the information about this vehicle’s tyre pressure and how you’d check it
Manufacturer’s guide, use a reliable pressure gauge, check and adjust when tyres are cold, don’t forget spare tyre, don’t forget to refit valve caps
Tell me how you’d make sure your head restraint is adjusted correctly
Adjusted so the rigid part of the restraint is at least in line with eyes and as close to back of head as is possible
How would you check tread depth?
No cuts and bulges, 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the breadth of tyre, and around outer circumference of tyre
Tell me how you’d check Head and tail lights working
Operate the switch (turn on ignition if necessary) then walk around vehicle and see
Tell me how you’d know there’s a problem with your anti-lock braking system
Warning lights should illuminate if there’s a problem with the system
How would you check the direction indicators are working?

Press brake pedal, check for reflections in windows and doors, ask someone for help
How would you check the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey?
If steering feels heavy, system might not be working. Gentle pressure on steering wheel while engine is turned on should result in slight but noticeable movement when system starts. Or turning steering wheel just after moving off will give an immediate indication that the power assistance system is working
How would you turn on fog lights and when would they be used?
Operate switch (turn on ignition and dipped headlights if necessary) explain use
How would you change headlight from dipped to main beam, and how would you know main beam is on?
Operate switch (with ignition or engine on if necessary) check with main beam warning light

Identify oil level indicator, describe check of oil level against min and max markers
