teleological arugument Flashcards

Q

KEY TERMS

paleys design argument- key terms
a posteriori- depends of sense experience
empiricle in its nature
inductive- based on probability/ conc not nessciarily true but lots of evidence to believe so
natural theology- gods existence can be answered by nature, reasoning and science

Q

paleys teleological argument
- everything has a purpose
- based on complexity and regularity
**p1: **
- universe is complex
- all arragements have own purpose
p2:
- cannot happen by chance
- must have been desinged
p3:
- as so complex requires infinite great designer
p4:
- that designer is god

A

watch analogy
p1:
- watch is so complex and each cog serves its own purpose
p2:
- cant be chance must have a watch maker

Q

critisims of argument- hume
-hume doesnt respond to payley as dead but his arguments apply
rejection of idea
analogys are innapropriate
- living organism analogys would be more appropriate
- payleys examples are mechanistics so obviously a designer
order of things can be due to chance
- order is inevitable
- constantchanign of the universe means evoloution will bring things to order
little said about designer
- analogy is anthropomorphic
- humans have no knowledge of how universe was made
- creates a universe designer in our image
- doesnt necissarilty means a theistic cristian god
- could be number of gods
- traditional hristian god does not operate is univerdal rues so can comprehend a god universally or physically
problem of evil
- existence of theworld doesnt imply a perfect creator
- world is flawed existence and design
- if inherent evil in the world why would a perfect creator intentionally create this
- inconsistent triad

Q

evaluation of argument
weakness
- claims about theistic god are beyond evidence payley gives
- existence of evil suggests an incompetent creator or noneat all
- aparent order and purpose are just chance- support from darwin and dawkins
- universe can design itself by chance- multiverse theorries show

A

strenghts
- swineburn argues existence of a single omnipotenet creator is simplest explanation- ocaams razor
- paley says evil may be unavoidale for god to bring about good- free wil defense
- evoloutiion still requires a explanantion(swineburn). not compatible with theism
- nature shows intnetion is suported by anthropic principle

Q

statement as proof?
doesnt offer proof
- inductive argument so cannot give absoloute proof- only deductive can
- paleys observations to support csn be explained naturally e.g. regular rotatio of planets is due to gravity
- if multiverse theory is true, then apparent design is chance

A

does offer proof
- most things accepted as tue are inductive arguments. stronger the evidence, more probale claim is/// true beyond reasonable doubt
- laws of nature still require explanation. meaning challanges of paleys argument do not diminish that the argument is true
- we cannot be sure multiverse theory is true

Q

value of argument in religious faith
positive side- value
- rationally and empirically based\
- consistent with bibile teaching- guiding hand direncitng humans purpose and lives
- neither theists or athiest can proove thier beliefs
both rely on reason and empiricle evidnce for inductive arguments
paleys reasoning + appeal to observation with simplicity of argument provide strong support for theists

A

negative side- no value
- doesnt succesfully adress the problem of evil
- for fedeists rational arguments play no part in faith- dont lead to commitement

Q

h.h. price- realtionship between reason and faith
- belief that and belief in
- witout belief in, beleif that is ot significant
belief in
- attitude of commitement and trust
belief that
- acceptance and proposition about something
