Telemetry Rhythm Flashcards
What is repolarization?
Period of rest or recovery
During this time no electrical activity is occurring and a straight line is recorded on the ECG
What is depolarization?
Period of stimulation
Results from an electrolyte exchange in cardiac cells
It is an electrical event that results in muscle contraction
Where is the SA node?
The SA node is located at junction of the superior vena cave and right atrium
What is considered the “pacemaker” of the heart?
The SA node
What is the rate for the SA node?
60-100 BPM
What is the AV node also called?
The GATEKEEPER
What does the AV node do?
Controls number of impulses which reach ventricle
Functions as the backup pacemaker
What is the rate for the AV node?
40-60 BPM
What is the AV node’s goal?
prevent ventricles from contracting before adequate filling occurs
What do Purkinje fibers do?
Carries electrical impulse directly to the ventricles
Conduction of the electrical impulse is the fastest of any tissue in the conduction system
What is the rate for Purkinje fibers?
20-40 BPM
What is a P wave?
First deflection of the cardiac cycle?
Characteristics of P wave?
Caused by depolarization of the atria
Begins as the deflection leaves baseline
Ends when deflection returns to baseline
Normal P waves are smooth, rounded, and positive (upright) in Lead II
