Telecommunications Flashcards
Communication
The word ‘communication’ means sending and receiving data between two individuals or amongst many people.
What is a data communication system
Telecommunications system is a system of transmission of sounds, images, texts or data in the form of electronic signals.
What is data
It refers to the raw facts to be communicated
What is protocol
This is a set of rules that are followed by the sender and the receiver to
make communication possible.
What is simplex mode of telecommunication
In this mode, transmission can take place in only one direction.
What is half duplex mode of telecommunication
In this mode, data can be transmitted to both directions, but only to one direction at a time.
What is full duplex mode of transmission
This mode allows simultaneous transmission of data to both directions.
What is bandwidth
Bandwidth is a term which is used to describe the data handling capacity of a communication system.
Guided/bounded media
Bounded media are the physical links through which signals are confined to a narrow path.
Unguided/wireless media
Unbounded/Unguided media or wireless media do not use any physical connectors between the two communicating devices.
Digital modem
Receives microwaves and converts them into digital signals.
Antenna
An antenna transmits and receives the microwave signals.
What is a computer network
A computer network means two or more computers connected to each other to share data, hardware, software and other resources.
Advantages of a computer network
Communication made by a computer network is very cheap.
Computers in a network system share different software packages.
Disadvantages of computer network
Network failure may cause loss of data
The system is open to hackers
Server
A server is the main computer that provides services, data and other resource to other computers in the network environment.
Workstation
Workstation is a computer where the client works.

Hub
A hub is a device with multiple points or ports. It acts as a central point from where different computers and other devices are connected. It also amplifies the signals and sends them to all connected devices.
Repeater
A repeater is a device that amplifies the incoming signals, creates a new copy of it and transmits the signals on the network.
Bridge
A bridge is a device that connects two or more similar types of networks.
Router
A router is an intelligent device that connects two different networks. Like a bridge, a router also filters and forwards information among different networks.
Gateway
connects two Gateway dissimilar networks.
Modem
the MODEM
receives analog signals from a phone line and converts them into digital signals for the
computer.
LAN
A local area network (LAN) is a
network of computers and other devices that are relatively near to each other and are connected in a way that enables them to communicate by cables and a small wireless device.
MAN
A metropolitan area network
(MAN) is a
network of
computers which is spread over a metropolitan area such as within a city. It connects two or more LAN together.
WAN
A wide area network
(WAN) is a network

of connecting
two or more computers generally across a wide geographical area such as cities, districts, and

Intranet
An intranet is a private network that can only be accessed by authorized users.
Extranet
An extranet is a private network that allows access of data, information from outside for specific business or educational purposes.
What is Network topologies
The arrangement or connection pattern of computers or nodes and other devices of the network is known as network topology.
Bus topology
In a bus topology computers and other devices are arranged in a linear format
Ring topology
In a ring topology computers are connected in the shape of a circle without any end point.
Star topology
In a star topology all computers or network devices are connected through a central device called hub or switch.
Centralized computing network
In the centralized computing network, the main computer is called host computer here the workstations don’t have any processing power.
The client server network
The client server network consists at least one server and 2 or more clients.
Peer to peer network
Peer to peer network is a group of computers which function both as servers and workstations to share data information.
