21
Q

How did Truman becoming the president affect the Potsdam conference?

A

Truman replaced Roosevelt as president of the USA. He openly had different views on communism and Stalin. He ended the economic support that the Americans had been giving the Soviets. He became impatient with the Soviets after the news of the atomic bomb emerged.

22
Q

Why was a nuclear threat a disagreement at the Potsdam conference?

A

Just before the conference the USA successfully exploded an atomic bomb. Truman is said to have remarked, “if it works… I’ll sure have a hammer on those boys.”

23
Q

Why was there a disagreement about the expansion of communism at the Potsdam conference?

A

There was little evidence that Stalin was going to go through with his original agreement at Yalta that free elections would be held in Eastern Europe after the defeat of Nazi Germany.
The Red Army was in control of Poland, where the USSR was in the process of setting up a communist government.

24
Q

What was the outcome of the Potsdam conference?

A

Little real progress was made beyond agreement to put into action the commitments made at Yalta.

25
Q

Summaries the results of the Potsdam conference.

A

-Stalin didn’t seem like he was going to allow free elections in Eastern Europe
-A communist government was being set up in Poland
-There were arguments about how much the USSR should be allowed to in reparations

26
Q

What were Churchill’s priorities for the Yalta conference?

A

-To maintain Britain’s global empire and prestige
-To withstand pressure from the USA and the USSR to end Britain’s colonial empire

27
Q

What were Roosevelt’s priorities for the Yalta conference?

A

-World peace- to help the USA rebuild its connections with the global economy
-World peace and global free trade to ensure that an event like the Great Depression wouldn’t happen again
-He believed that a UN organization would be an effective peacekeeping force

28
Q

What were Stalin’s priorities at the Yalta conference?

A

-Security against western imperialist aggression
-Russia had been invaded three times by the west between 1914-1941 and Stalin wanted a buffer zone of communist countries in Easter Europe to give Russia that security

29
Q

What was agreed upon at Yalta?

A

-Germany would be divided into four zones each controlled by one-off: USSR, Britain, France and USA
-The German capital, Berlin, would also be divided into those four zones
-All countries freed from Nazi control were guaranteed the right to hold free elections
-Stalin promised to join the war against Japan, once Germany was defeated

-The USA and Britain would invade France by May 1944
-The USSR would join the USA and Britain in the war against Japan, once Nazi Germany was defeated
