Stanford university course on artificial intelligence which they made available online to 160,000 users
Who did the talk on online learning for artificial intelligence, which went to 160,000 users?
Peter norvig
Who did the Ted talk on “simplifying complexity”
Eric Berlow
What was Eric Berlow’s main message?
Simplicity lies on the other side of complexity. Hugely complex diagram depicting how to reduce counter-insurgency in Afghanistan, which stated goal to increase popular support for the afghan government. which he simplified down to two actionable points: (active engagement with ethnic rivalries and religious beliefs; fair, transparent economic development)
What is Eric Berlow quote?
“simplicity often lies on the other side of complexity”
Who talks about the candle problem?
Dan Pink, who used to be Al Gore’s speech writer. For very simple tasks monetary motivators work (routine, procedural, left brain work) but for anything complex (right brain, conceptual) they don’t, or worse they may harm performance. Once a task calls for “rudimentary cognitive skill, a larger reward leads to worse performance”
What are Dan Pink’s “intrinsic motivators”?
Autonomy - the urge to direct our own lives, Mastery - the desire to et better and better at something that matters, Purpose - the yearning to do what we do in the service of something larger ban ourselves. He reckons pay people adequately and fairly (get the issue of money off the table) then give lots of autonomy.
What is a “Rowe”?
A results only work environment, according to Dan Pink. No schedule, show up when you want. Don’t have to be in office at a certain time…or at any time. All meetings are optional. They just have to get their work done. How they do it, where they do it, is totally up to them.
Who is Sarah-Jayne Blakemore?
She studies the adolescent brain, making use of techniques which have emerged over the last 10 years such as MRI to “look inside” the working brain
What is Sarah-Jayne Blakemore’s key message?
Brain development isn’t all over in the early years, it continues past adolescence into the 20s and 30s
Which brain region changes most adolescence?
The pre-frontal cortex, according to Sarah-Jayne Blakemore. This area is proportionally much bigger in humans than other species; During this period, grey matter decreases as unused synapses are pruned. The ability to consider someone else’s perspective is still developing in mid to late adolescence.
What does the limbic system do?
Emotion processing and reward processing, according to sarah-Jayne Blakemore. It gives you the kick out of taking risks. This is hyper-sensitive during adolescence, at the same time as the pre-frontal cortex (which stops us) is under developed. We should view these years not as a problem, but as and excellent opportunity for education and social development.
