Tectonics Flashcards
Draw and label the structure of the Earth
What are tectonic plates?
Tectonic plates are ‘floating’ on semi-molten layer of rock in the magma. Convection currents within the mantle cause the plates to move.
What are some examples of the different plates the Earth is split up into?
Pacific plate
Nazca plate
Indo-Australian plate
South American plate
Antarctic plate
How do constructive plate boundaries work?
Draw a diagram:
Two tectonice plates are moving apart from each other. The gap in the crust causes magma to rise and cool. Earthquakes and volcanoes are found here.
How do Destructive plate boundaries work?
Draw a diagram:
When two plates move towards each other, one sinks (is subducted) below the other once. Volcanoes and earthquakes are found here.
How do conservative plates work?
Draw a diagram:
When two plates are moving side by side, in different directions or the same direction but at different speeds. earthquakes are found here.
