Tectonics Flashcards
From outermost to innermost, what are the 4 parts that make up the earth’s structure?
Crust, mantle, outer core, inner core
What is the thinnest layer?
The crust
How thick is the crust?
The earth’s crust is between 5 and 70 km thick
What is the crust made up of?
Solid rock broken up into tectonic plates
What is the thickest layer?
The mantle
What moves the mantle?
Convection currents
How hot is the mantle
Nearer to the crust it is 1000 degrees celcius but nearer to the outer core it is 3700 degrees
What is it made up of
Semi molten rock (semi liquid). Solid rock that can flow
What is it made up of
Semi molten rock (semi liquid). Solid rock that can flow
What is the outer core made up of?
Semi-liquid Iron
How hot is the outer core?
3700-5000 degrees
How hot is the outer core?
3700-5000 degrees
How thick is the outer core?
Approximately 2700km thick
Why is the outer core so important?
The outer core is so important because it is where the earths magnetic field is formed, which protects us from solar winds and allows life
How thick is the inner core?
The inner core is approximately 1250km thick
