Tectonic Processes and Hazards Flashcards
Why are some locations more at risk from tectonic hazards?
Areas that are closer to fault lines will see more tectonic hazards.
Basalt
Fine-grained, igneous rock, underlying more of the earth’s surface than any other rock type, especially ocean basins. Associated mainly with constructive plate boundaries.
Andesite
Typically found in lava flows produced by stratovolcanoes. Generally formed after an oceanic plate melts during its decent into the subduction zone.
Convergent Plate Boundaries
Convergent margins happen when the oceanic plate slides beneath the continental plate.
Crust is destroyed as one plate dives under another at the subduction zone.
The rocks catch against each other as the plates are not smooth.
The pressure between plates build up until the plates can’t take the stress.
The plates slip past each other, which can cause both the plates to move resulting in the ground shaking.
Conservative Plate Boundaries
