Tectonic Processes 3 Flashcards
4 Layers of Earth:
- Crust
- Mantle
- Outer core
- Inner core
What is the difference between oceanic and continental crust/plates?
Oceanic plates: under oceans
Continental plates: carries land
What process moves the plates in the mantle?
Convection currents
Where are you most likely to find tectonic hazards?
By or on a plate boundary
Which direction do conservative plates move in?
Side my side in same or opposite directions
What hazards are found at a convergent plate boundary?
Earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis
How are volcanoes formed at a divergent plate boundaries?
- Plates separate, magma fills the gap, gradually building up layers of volcanic rock under the ocean to form a volcano.
What scale is used to measure the energy released by earthquakes?
Richter scale
How do earthquakes form at a convergent plate boundary?
One plate slides beneath another, creating friction. When the built-up pressure overcomes this friction, it releases energy as an earthquake.
What are the main features of a volcano?
- Main vent
- Crater
- Magma chamber
- Secondary cone
- Layers of ash and lava.
