Aftershocks
Smaller earthquakes and tremors that follow the main quake.
epicentre
The point on the Earth’s surface directly above the focus of an earthquake.
LEDC
Less economically developed country (LEDC) has low levels of development, based on economic indicators, such as gross domestic product (the country’s income).
looting
A term which refers to stealing from unguarded homes or businesses.
MEDC
A more economically developed country (MEDC) has high level of development based on economic indicators such as gross domestic product (the country’s income).
seismometer
A machine that detects seismic waves caused by earthquakes.
tsunami
A large destructive wave caused by earthquakes, volcanic activity or landslides under water.
flash flood
Rapid increase in the amount of water (discharge) which the river is carrying.
afforestation
The deliberate planting of trees on otherwise bare land. Afforestation can create new habitats for wildlife, stabilise soils and prevent surface run-off.
cyclones
The name for a tropical storm in India .
drainage basin
The area of land that is drained by a river and all its tributaries.
fertile
A soil which is rich in nutrients.
levee
Ridges or banks formed by deposits of alluvium left behind by the periodic flooding of rivers. Can also be artificially constructed banks or walls.
MEDC
More economically developed country (MEDC). This type of country is wealthier or has higher standards of health and education than many other countries.
river channel
The part of the river that holds the water.
