tectonic plates Flashcards

1
Q

what makes the lithosphere

A

The crust and upper layer of the mantle together make up a zone of rigid, brittle rock called the lithosphere.

Q

plate movement

A

Plate motion is the result of the movement of material in the upper mantle, which drags the overlying plates above.
Convection currents take place in the mantle

A

A subduction zone is a convergent boundary where two tectonic plates collide.

Q

Why do volcanoes occur?

A

Magma rises to the surface where the earth’s plates pull apart (divergent zones)
“Holes” in the plates called hotspots
Cooler oceanic crust dives underneath continental crust (convergent boundary) forcing magma to rise to the surface
