Tectonic Plates Flashcards
Distinguished based on their composition
Composition layers
Is the thin hard outermost layer of the earth it covers about 0.8% of the earth’s volume
Crust
One of the two types of Crust. It forms the ocean floor and is about 8 km thick
Oceanic Crust
One of the two types of Crust. It forms the continents and is about 32 km thick
Continental Crust
Oceanic crust is made up of dense to material such as
Basalt and Gabbro
Continental crust consist primarily of
Granite and Gneiss
Is the layer between the crust and the core. It is made of partially molten mixtures of silicate minerals and covers about 84% of the earth’s volume.
Mantle
Is the extremely hot, dense center of the earth. It is composed mainly of nickel-iron alloy. It occupies about 16% of the earth’s volume.
Core
They are distinguished based on rock strength and rigidity.
Mechanical Layers
First mechanical layer. Consists of the crust and uppermost portion of the mantle
Rocks are stronger and more rigid than asthenosphere rocks
Lithosphere
The first layer of mechanical layer is divided into several segments called
Tectonic Plates
Major plates
Pacific Plate
North American plate
Eurasian Playe
African plate
antarctic plate
Indo-australian plate
Consists of the upper mantle
Asthenosphere
Is comprised of a lower mantle. It is between the asthenosphere and outer core
Mesosphere
Is the liquid iron layer. That covers the inner core. The temperature in this layer is so high that rocks melt
Outer Core
