Q

Describe a destructive plate margin

A

Where two plates meet
Where an oceanic and continental plate meet, the denser oceanic plate is subducted and destroyed creating gas-rich magma. E.g. volcanoes and oceanic trenches.
When two continental plates meet the ground folds upwards creating fold mountains

Q

Describe a constructive plate margin

A

Two plates move away from each other, magma rises through the mantle to create new crust following cooling

Q

Describe a conservative margin

A

Two plates move sideways past each other in the same direction but at different speeds, crust is neither created nor destroyed

Q

Explain how volcanoes are formed

A

At destructively margins, denser oceanic plate moves down into the mantle where it melts, a pool of magma forms, this magma rises through the vents and erupts.

At constructive margins, the magma rises through the gaps created by plates moving apart.
