Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
Natural Hazard
Naturally occurring event eg: Tornado
How many layers does the earth’s structure have?
5:
Crust, Asthenosphere, Mantle, Outercore, Innercore.
What is Oceanic Crust?
The outermost layer of the earth found under oceans.
What is the outermost layer of the earth called?
Lithosphere (Crust)
What is Continental Crust?
The outermost layer of the earth which makes up the continents.
How does a convection current work?
Hotter Magma Travels Up, Cools, Then Travels Back Down, Repeat.
What is the subduction point?
Point where the oceanic plate is dragged under the continental plate. (Destructive/Convergent)
Describe what happens in a constructive/divergent plate?
2 Oceanic Plates Move Away From Each Other, Causing Magma from the mantle to spill out, causing volcanoes or earthquakes.
Define Constructive (Divergent) Plate
Constructive is where 2 plates move apart.
Define Destructive (Convergent) Plate
Destructive is where 2 plates move towards one another.
Define Conservative (Transform) Plate
Conservative is where 2 plates are sliding along each other.
TRUE OR FALSE:
The Oceanic Crust is LESS dense than the Continental Crust
FALSE:
The Oceanic Crust is DENSER than the Continental Crust.
What is a Trench?
A Trench is where Oceanic Crust and Continental Crust meet.
What happens when a Continental Plate and Another Continental Plate push against each other?
When 2 Continental Plates push against each other they form fold mountains because their densities are the same and can’t go below each other.
