Tectonic Hazards Flashcards

1
Q

How does a constructive plate boundary work?

A

1 - convection currents force molten rock into lithosphere
2 - melts enough to allow molten rock to rise to surface
3 - dense rock sinks away which pushes plates apart (ridge push)

Q

How does a conservative plate boundary work?

A

1 - convention currents force plate alongside each other
2 - same or opposite directions but at different speeds
3 - stuck and build up pressure
4 - pressure released suddenly causes earthquakes

Q

How does a collision plate boundary work?

A

1 - two continental plates forced together by convection currents
2 - neither subduction so push into each other and fold up (mountains)

Q

How does a destructive plate boundary work?

A

1 - denser oceanic subducts under lighter continental plate
2 - oceanic melts in subduction zone
3 - molten rock rises to surface so volcanoes
4 - continental crumples causing fold mountains
