Tectonic Hazards Flashcards
What is an Earthquake, Volcano, and a tsunami?
Earthquake= when the ground shakes due to plate movements
Volcanoes= magma from earth is released
tsunamis= big waves caused by earthquakes
What are primary tectonic hazards?
Earthquakes and volcanoes
what are secondary tectonic hazards?
Tsunamis
Draw a destructive plate.
Two plates moving towards each other.
draw a conservative plate.
Two plates sliding past eachother
draw a constructive plate.
two plates moving away from each other
What are the structure of the Earth (4 Layers)
inner core, outer core, mantle, crust
what are the two types of crusts?
Continental crusts
Oceanic crusts
Where do earthquakes occur?
On plate boundaries. they occur on remote areas. most earthquakes occur on the ‘ring of fire’
what are seismic waves
a seismic wave is caused by earthquakes energy
what does earthquake magnitude measure?
it measures the amount of energy released at the epicenter.
what does the earthquake intensity measure ?
an earthquakes affect on people, structures, and the natural environment
what is the formula to Spearman’s Rank Correlation?
6xEd2
rs=1- —————
n3-n
why would some people/groups be more vulnerable to hazards?
-gender
-age
-housing
-disability
-income
-proximity to location
what is a mega-disaster?
a mega disaster is a disaster with over 2000 deaths or over 200,000 people made homeless or losses of 5% of the GDP.
