Q

What happens at a destructive plate margin?

A

Plates move towards each other, denser oceanic crust subducts under the less dense continental plate. Gravity pulls the oceanic plate into the mantle dragging the plate away from the continental margin.

Q

How can prediction help reduce tectonic risk?

A

Using seismometers to monitor the earth’s tremors. Scientist will know where it will happen but not when.

Q

How can protection help reduce tectonic risk?

A

Building more buildings that are safe against earthquakes and tectonic activity:

  1. Shock absorbers in buildings foundation to absorb earth tremors
  2. Steel sway that moves with earth movement
  3. Open areas outside the building where people can assemble during an evacuation.

Q

How does planing help reduce tectonic risk?

A

In areas with high tectonic risk hospitals, schools, and residents have drills to practice in case of an earthquake. This increases the chance of survival for residents.
