Tectonic Formations Flashcards
1
Q
Rift Valley formation
A
- Constructive boundary moves apart convection currents
- Heat flows through cracks creating bulges, stretching and fracturing plate
- Leads to chunks of crust to descend
- Areas on other side of valley rise creating Horst
- Area pulled leads to material bursting, forming flood basalts
2
Q
Ocean trench formation (similar to fold mountain )
A
- Form at destructive boundaries
- Dense oceanic plate melts or slides beneath continental plate - subjecting to create a trench underwater
3
Q
Fold mountain formation
A
- Form at destructive boundary
- Dense oceanic plate melts or slides beneath continental plate - subjecting to form fold mountain on land
4
Q
Volcano formation
A
- Volcanoes form when magma from upper mantle in hotspot reaches its way to the surface
- Magma either forced out by converging boundaries or fills space left, erupting creating more material and growing further
