Tectonic Cards Flashcards
How does a tsunami happen
Earthquake or volcanic activity under the sea floor causes the floor to thrust up. This causes water to rise up and form a wave. It starts off with a long wavelength and small height. As it gets to the shore it gets taller and the wavelength shortens due to the sea floor rising.
Volcanic hazards
Ash, pyrochlastic flow, debris, lava.
Modify…
- Loss
- Event
- Vulnerability
Order of earth’s layers
Crust, mantle, outer core, inner core.
What causes earthquakes?
Two plates collide, causing an earthquake.
Types of plate boundaries
Destructive( convergent) , constructive(divergent) , transform.
What makes a mega disaster?
- 5% fall GDP
- 2000 deaths
- 200,000 homeless
- Dependence on foreign aid for a year
Risk=
Hazard X vulnerability
Park’s model-
Pre disaster, relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction.
Slow onset examples
Drought, famine
Rapid onset examples-
Earthquake, tsunami, volcanic eruption.
Hazard profile
Analysis of different types of hazard events.
Focal depth
How deep an earthquake occurs.
Why more hazards ‘reported’?
Global communications network -social media, spreads faster.
4 main stages of the hazard management cycle
Response, recovery, mitigation, preparedness.
