Q

How does subduction occur

A

Subductions happens when plate tectonics interact with each other. This happens because plate techtonics move apart from one another which can cause them to collide with another plate.

16
Q

Which way is the pacific plate going when it is subduction

A

Downwards

17
Q

Whats an epicentre?

A

Point on the earths surface directly above the focus

18
Q

Whats a focus?

A

Point of interest

19
Q

What two directions is the alpine fault moving

A

Vertical and horizontal

20
Q

What is the source of heat energy that creates convection currents in the mantle?

A

The core

21
Q

Whats a convection current

A

Large scale movements of hot material in the mantle (including the asthenosphere)

22
Q

Whats a transform boundary?

A

When plates are scraping past each other

23
Q

Whats a divergent boundary?

A

When plates are moving apart

24
Q

Whats a convergent boundary

A

When plates are colliding with each other

25
Q

Whats the alpine fault

A

It is a transform fault. The australian plate is sliding horizontally towards the north- east, at the same time as the pacific plate is pushing up, forming the southern alps.

26
Q

Is it true that the pacific plate gets warmer the deeper it subducts

A

Yes

27
Q

True or false does the pp sub-ducts under the ap, assisted by gravity

A

True

28
Q

How do techtonic plates cause earthquakes?

A

When tectonic plates, shift, they can get stuck due to the friction. As the pressure/stress builds up, the plates suddenly slip/ release of energy, causing seismic waves that shake the ground and result in an earthquake.
