Technology in sport Flashcards
What are the ethics of technology in sport?
- Equity of access – accessing technology is expensive
- Improves athlete’s performance
- Athletes with best equipment perform better
- Changes nature of the game
How does technology create an unfair competition?
Technology can create unfair competition as not everyone has access if they cannot afford it. If all competitors cannot access technology then the competition is unfair due to inequities in access to technology.
What are features of the LZR Swimsuit?
IT IS BANNED!
Features: full body compression to streamline the swimmer’s body to add buoyancy and reduce form drag, reduces muscle oscillation and skin vibration, light weight, water-repellent and freedom of movement. It is very expensive and hard to put on.
How does the LZR swimsuit improve performance?
- Swim at same speed using less energy – going harder for longer
- Compresses body to glide through water better
- Adds buoyancy
Ethics of the LZR swimsuit
Expensive and hard to put on
What are compression boots?
Using compressed air to massage your legs, mobilize fluid, and speed recovery, these boots feel like a deep pressure, relaxing massage to your legs.
What are benefits of compression boots?
- Improve circulation
- Remove waste products including lactic acid
- Improve range of movement and flexibility
- Decrease recovery time
- Allow your to train harder quicker
- Increase flexibility and joint range of motion
Ethics of compression boots
Expensive
What is lactate threshold testing?
A measure of fitness which analyses the flow of blood, speed and heart rate whilst training for a sport. It is used to see how hard an athlete is working.
Benefits of lactate threshold testing?
- Get performance info – how to improve
* Pushes you to work harder
What sports is lactate threshold testing used in?
- Swimming
- Running
- Cycling
Ethics of lactate threshold testing
- Expensive equipment
- Hard to access
- Have to get tested at certain training centers (AIS)
