The Maxim Gun: heavy + tended to overheat + jam bu Germany saw its value + deployed 12,000 guns while Britain had only a few hundred
From 1915, Brits relied on the lighter, reliable American Lewis gun which increased strength of infantry

- Germans first to use gas attacks at battle of Ypres in 1915
- fearsome reputation but not an effective weapon
- over 1 mil gassed but 91,000 killed
- phosgene more effective - kills in 48 hours
