Technology Flashcards
How does technology help an athlete’s health?
The nutrition of athletes plays on important role in their physical development and recovery. We can monitor and calculate this with great accuracy thanks to technology.
How has technology aided recovery?
Technology has also decreases the recovery time of injured performers through the use of ice baths, oxygen tents and hyperbaric chambers.
How has technology made sport safer ?
In cricket, hockey and football, the development of pads and helmets has increased safety.
State some examples of how technology has led to the creation of better equipment that lasts longer and is easier to use?
- Sprinters’ running spikes are lighter and offer more support around the ankle.
- Bodysuits in cycling let performers be more streamlined.
- Tennis rackets that allow increased ball spin and speed.
- Prosthetic limbs for disabled athletes.
What can a performer use match analysis technology to study?
1) The performance of their opponent
2) Their own performance
What are the pros of technology in sport?
Lower chance of error
- Using technology greatly reduces the chances of human error.
- Photo-finishes, electronic timings and third umpire technologies are producing much more accurate judgements in sports.
What are the cons of technology in sport?
Unequal success
- Technology does not give equality across sports. Those that can afford the best technologies have a huge advantage.
Time consuming
- It takes time to wait for TMO/Hawkeye type decisions to be made. This can make viewing boring.
New ways to cheat
- Technology can offer new ways to cheat.
E.g. doping–> performers can find new ways to dope and increase performance.
E.g. cricket bat tape–> performers used tape that stopped “Hot Spot” detecting whether someone had edged the ball or not.
What are the advantages of technology for officials?
Less pressure
(Technology can take pressure off officials making live decisions.)
Better communication between officials.
(Officials can also communicate with each other during play through microphones.)
Improved decisions
(We can use ball-tracking technology in tennis to challenge the decisions made by the officials.)
^Although this takes time, the decision process can be exciting as everyone is shown the decision from lots of camera angles around the ground.
What is a disadvantage of technology for officials?
Too reliant on technology
Officials can rely too much on the technologies.
Looking at too many slow-motion replays can slow the game down too much and change the intensity of the sport.
What impact does technology have on spectators?
Technology has made the viewing experience more interesting for spectators at home.
What is a positive impact of technology for spectors?
Spectators can watch the sport from different cameras with the use of the red button.
- International football fixtures now have a camera that stretches over the pitch. This offers a bird’s eye close-up view anywhere during the game.
What is a negative impact of technology for sponsors?
Reputation risk
- There is a bigger chance of a performer being caught cheating on camera.
- This is bad for sponsors who are associated with these performers as they get negative publicity.
What is a positive impact of technology for sponsors?
More advertising
- Some technologies (in American sports) let the sponsor’s logo be in the picture without even being physically on the pitch.
- Increased advertising means increased sales.
